Definitely not your grandmother’s snowball bush! This pink aristocrat is featured on the cover of Michael Dirr’s new book, Viburnums. The species is a broad, rounded shrub, 6-10 feet tall with a beautiful horizontal branching habit. The rounded flower clusters of ‘Kern’s Pink’ are a mix of creamy white and dusty pink, and create a stunning show in May. The thick leaves are deeply pleated and emerge with complementary burgundy tints, then turn a rich mahogany color in the fall. The way new-fallen snow lays on the outstretched branches is a sight to behold in winter. Tolerant of a range of soil and exposures, but appreciates some moisture and shade from the hottest afternoon sun compared to other viburnums. You can’t go wrong with this cover girl! Zone 5.
