padPanicum virgatum 'Shenandoah'

This is a beautiful grass for fall color. Leaves start out green and deepen to burgundy in mid summer. The airy panicles of seed heads are also burgundy, persisting through fall. The tawny winter color adds sound, movement and visual interest until grasses are cut back in late winter or very early spring to make way for new growth. This cultivar of our native switch grass does well in sunny gardens and a wide range of soil conditions as long as drainage is good. Grows 3 ½-4 feet tall with a slightly smaller spread. Plant fall-blooming asters with this grass for a beautiful fall combination. Dried seed heads are attractive in arrangements. Zone 4.
