Virginia bluebells are native wildflowers and classic spring ephemerals. They can be found in woodlands, along streams and at the edge of meadows all across eastern/central North America and south to Tennessee and Georgia. Mounds of bluish green foliage growing 1-2 feet tall appear in early spring followed by nodding clusters of pink buds opening to pale blue/lilac bluebells. It is absolutely striking when naturalized in a large area with daffodils! This long-lived perennial becomes dormant, dying back to the ground by early June. Combine with later-blooming perennials for summer color. But it also self sows, so there is always more the next spring. Best in full to partial shade and well-drained, evenly moist soils with a good organic matter content. Zone 3.
