padIlex verticillata 'Winter Red'

This long-time favorite is prized for holding its fruit longer than most other winterberry hollies. ‘Winter Red’s’ fruits often persist in good condition right through February! Dressed in lustrous dark green summer foliage, ‘Winter Red’s’ real show starts in fall as the fruits begin to ripen to red against the yellow autumn leaves. Prefers evenly moist, acidic soil with a high organic matter content, but is adaptable as long as the soil is acidic; very tolerant of wet soils. ‘Winter Red’ is a cultivar of our native deciduous holly, found on riverbanks and in wet areas throughout western Pennsylvania. Full sun to partial shade. Requires the male pollinator, ‘Apollo’ growing within 50 feet for best fruit set. One male can pollinate at least five female plants. Grows 8-9 feet tall with a similar spread. Use for massing, as an informal hedge or a specimen. Cut stems are attractive and long-lasting in winter arrangements. ‘Winter Red’ (Female), 'Apollo' (Male) Zone 3.
