Kalm St. Johnswort is a small, dense, evergreen shrub with upright branching that typically grows in a dense mound 2-3 feet tall and wide. Narrow bluish-green leaves are evergreen but some may drop in winter. Masses of small five-petaled, golden yellow flowers begin to bloom in June and repeat through early fall. Each flower has a distinctive center boss of yellow stamens. Flowers give way to beaked, oval, red-brown seed capsules that mature in fall and often persist on the shrub until spring, giving the shrub its distinctive texture. Native to the Great Lakes region of the U. S. where it typically occurs in rocky to sandy soils, ranging from relatively dry open woods to moist lakeshore areas. In Pittsburgh, this is a good plant for a sunny hillside or anywhere else you want a durable, attractive, deer resistant flowering shrub. Zone 4.
