padEryngium yuccifolium (Rattlesnake Master)

Who can deny the allure of that common name? So-called because it supposedly cures rattlesnake bites and is rumored to drive snakes away. Do not try this at home! The leaves are slightly spiny, long and strap-like (like a yucca), sometimes with a bluish cast. The spherical flower heads, composed of small whitish flowers, are held atop 3- to 4-foot stems. This native is a great plant for the home prairie or dry garden, is very drought tolerant once established and thrives in full sun and poor soils. A good plant to add texture and excitement to your garden--also great for the ‘What is that?’ factor! Native. Zone 5.
