Epimediums in general are valued for their long season of color in the shade garden. From very early spring bloom, to new foliage flushed with crimson, to textured evergreen foliage well into winter, these beauties are slow to establish but well worth the effort. ‘Enchantress’ forms vigorous clumps of long, narrow, crinkled leaves with prominent venation. Its 8-inch-tall evergreen foliage is topped in the spring by 16-inch sprays of delicate lavender pink flowers, which is a large and floriferous display for an epimedium. For an added bonus, flowers are held well above the foliage. Highly recommended for beginning gardeners and those areas that need coverage without invasiveness. Grows best in full to partial shade, and evenly moist, humus-rich soil. Although epimediums have a reputation for being tolerant of dry shade, ‘Enchantress’ prefers not to dry out during droughty summer weather. Clumps gradually enlarge and plants should be spaced 15-18 inches apart. Outstanding groundcover for shade, or planted with a tapestry of other small shade-lovers. Zone 5.
