padCorylus avellana 'Red Majestic'

Exceptional in both shape and color, this twisted hazelnut has deep purple-red leaves and is shaped like Harry Lauder’s Walking Stick! The long season of interest unfolds in spring, as the crinkled new growth emerges deep purple, and then matures to red. Fall color is a smoky burgundy that shares the stage with lovely purple catkins. The catkins persist after the foliage drops, playing off that wonderfully twisted shape. In many years can reach 10-20 feet tall with a similar or greater spread. Best in full sun to part shade and well-drained, good garden soil; pH adaptable. Be sure to plant ‘Red Majestic’ where you can enjoy the show year round. Zone 4.
