Flowering quince is one of the very first shrubs to bloom in early spring. Flowers emerge white, then mature through pink to red so that all colors are present at the same time! This floral explosion of color erupts before the leaves fully unfold. Leaves start out bronzy-red then turn to a dark glossy green. ‘Toyo-Nishiki’ is an upright grower and will reach 6-10 feet tall with a similar or slightly greater spread when planted in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Adaptable as long as drainage
is good, but does best in well-drained, evenly moist soil. ‘Toyo-Nishiki’ is suitable for espalier, or even bonsai. The apple-shaped, yellowish-green fruits ripen in October. Branches are lovely forced and in arrangements. Deer resistant. Zone 5.
