Maidenhair fern is native to shady woodlands in the eastern half of the United States. It is a supremely delicate-looking plant, which belies its incredible toughness. The leaflets are suspended from a curved black wire-like stem. Young fronds emerge pink in the spring. Maidenhair fern spreads slowly by rhizomes to form
a nice patch. It performs best in moist shade, but is agreeable to a little more sun or dryness. The maidenhair fern is well-suited to shaded border, woodland garden, shaded rock garden or native plant garden. Its fine texture complements broad-leaf plants such as hostas, caladiums or brunneras. Also makes an effective edger along paths in shade gardens. Grows 1-2½ feet tall with a slightly smaller spread. Zone 3.
